Saturday Sound Off: Halloween Costumes

There is less than a week left until Halloween. Let's talk costumes!

First of all, do you have your costumes yet? Are you waiting for the 50% off signs to come out or are you just a procrastinator?

Are your costumes homemade this year? Is that out of being frugal or do you enjoy making them yourself more than buying them at the store? (Don't forget to vote in the poll in the sidebar.)

One issue that comes to my mind is the overall scariness of costumes in the smaller sizes. When perusing eBay the other day, I saw a size 4T costume of a ghoulish monster complete with bloody guts spilling out of ripped clothing. I'm sorry, but the idea of a four year old wearing that gives me nightmares! I can't imagine what it would do to the 4 year old.

I waited until yesterday to buy our costumes to take advantage of the discount prices. I have made the costumes in the past but due to too many other things going on this year, it just wasn't going to happen. Did I feel a tiny bit guilty about it? Yes. But I got over that really quickly when I realized my sons wishes of being superheroes would be better fulfilled by store bought costumes than by any rag-tag thing my un-crafty self could come up with.

It's time for you to sound off! What are your opinions on Halloween costumes?

Thankfully with our son only being 14 months (and his first "real" Halloween to go trick-or-treating, yay!) we are able to be frugal and put together an easy (partially) homemade costume this year.

He is obsessed with green. And turtles. Problem solved. He's going in a set of green sweats, and we are decorating a "shell" to strap to his back!

Ta-da!

I've also always loved being crafty, so I have a feeling his costumes will be homemade (or at least, mostly) for at least several more years to come!

I tend to agree with the overall "feel" of store-bought costumes these days. Little boys costumes screaming "bloody murder" (quite literally), and the little girls get to pretend to be the next Brittany Spears. I absolutely love dressing up and having fun for Halloween (it's a great way to be a kid again, no?!), but that is taking things too far for children who are so young in my opinion.

I grew up with my mom making my Halloween costumes. I haven't gotten crafty for my little ones' costumes yet, but I have been able to find their first 3 costumes at Mom 2 Mom sales for just a couple dollars. I hope that I will be as ambitious as my mom was when my kids need new costumes in a couple years, though.

Every year Americans spend billions of dollars on Halloween.
